Go Hawks

Dear Schofield Families,

This week, our amazing STAR students earned their first school-wide reward of the year.  Through their hard work, positive behavior and dedication to Schofield’s core values, they reached their goal of filling the star jar and got to watch the first part of the movie, Wall-E!   Students continue to earn stars for showing STAR behavior during arrival, dismissal, breakfast as well as in the hallways and at their lockers. They are rocking it and we are all so proud of them.  Go Hawks!

THANK YOU
Last weekend, several families came to Schofield to participate in a campus clean up.  They trimmed bushes, raked leaves and put down new mulch.  It’s always heartening when students and their families take care of the school they love so much.  Thanks to all of the families who helped!

STEAM Week
Be sure to ask your child about their work on the Panda Puzzle this week.  All students in grades K-5 participated in solving these engaging spatial puzzles that varied in terms of the challenge from kindergarten through fifth grade. I listened in on a class discussion where they were debriefing their work on the Panda Puzzle and students shared about how this activity taught them how important it is to persevere when things get difficult.

Title I
This year, Schofield is participating in the federally-funded Title I Targeted Assistance Program (TAP).  Please see for more information about what this means for Schofield.  As always, please reach out if you have any questions.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-teacher conferences begin next week.  This is a valuable opportunity to connect with your child’s teacher and discuss their progress as well as goals for the school year.  Our partnership is key to our students’ success so be on the lookout for the sign ups and reach out if you cannot find a time that works.

I hope you all have a fantastic fall weekend.

All the best,
Jordan

Go Hawks

Dear Schofield Families,

Exciting news! During Thursday morning’s live-streamed announcements to all classrooms, we celebrated a major achievement—we succeeded in filling our school-wide Star Jar! This means that, through our collective efforts in demonstrating positive behavior and our school values, we’ve earned a special reward: a whole-school “short” movie!  We are so proud of our students for working together to reach this goal, and we look forward to enjoying this well-deserved reward together next week.

Another highlight of the week was seeing the fifth graders and kindergartners get together the first time this year for buddies.  There was such amazing energy and excitement for this partnership to begin and I know both the kindergarten students and our fifth grade leaders had a fantastic time getting to know one another!

STEAM Week:
This year, is celebrated from October 21- 25th. In Wellesley we say STEAM to acknowledge the art and creativity involved in STEM. This year, Wellesley elementary schools will focus on the Math in STEAM with our students.  Next week, your child will be exploring and trying to solve a challenging spatial puzzle.

Why a Spatial Puzzle? What’s important about Spatial Reasoning?

  • Spatial reasoning provides multiple entry points and equitable access to mathematics.

  • Spatial reasoning is critical to mathematics and to STEAM more broadly.  Research indicates a strong relationship between spatial reasoning and mathematics achievement across grades.

  • Spatial reasoning is also an important predictor of achievement in STEAM careers.

  • Spatial reasoning is malleable and can be improved at any age.

  • Spatial puzzles are fun and provide productive struggle.

If you are interested in continuing and enriching this type of spatial reasoning for your child at home, there are many commercial activities available. Here is for elementary age children.  Please reach out to Toni Carlson at carlsont@wellesleyps.org if you have any questions about STEAM week.

I am looking forward to wrapping up my week at the Schofield Halloween Dance. Thanks to the many parent volunteers who helped make this event possible.  Can’t wait to see the 5th Grade Crazy Cakes all of the creative costumes!

All the best,
Jordan

Dear Schofield Families,

We have had an awesome week here at Schofield.  Our entire school gathered on Wednesday for a whole-school assembly where we celebrated students for all of their hard work earning stars for their jars when following expectations for arrival, dismissal and breakfast.  We also introduced a new opportunity to earn stars by exhibiting STAR behavior in the hallways and at lockers.  A highlight of the assembly was when the entire school cheered for the students in KH who had learned all of the words to, “The Schofield School Song.”  Students are extremely excited to find out what the mystery school spirit day will be when we fill the school-wide jar very soon!  Stay tuned!

National Walk to School Day was a huge success with so many families walking, riding or even rolling to school.  Kudos to all!

SEL Groups at Schofield:
Ms. Berenson (social worker) and Ms. Robert (school psychologist) provide vital social, emotional and behavioral support to our students by meeting individually, in small groups and sometimes with entire classes. They also collaborate with teachers and staff to create positive learning environments and implement strategies that foster student well-being and success. Together, they help ensure our school is a safe and supportive space for all students.

Throughout the year, Ms. Berenson and Ms. Robert will be running SEL groups to work on a variety of social skills.  If you do not want your child to participate in a group, please use to opt out by Friday, October 25th.  Feel free to reach out to them directly with any questions: robertr@wellesleyps.org and  berensons@wellesleyps.org.

I want to wish those observing Yom Kippur an easy fast.  Please note that there is no school on Monday in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day so we will see students and staff back at Schofield on Tuesday.  Have a wonderful weekend!

Go Hawks

Dear Schofield Families,

As the leaves begin to change with the official start of fall, we are thrilled to see our students settling into their routines, engaging in new learning opportunities, and building friendships. This is such a special time of year as we watch our school community grow and thrive.  I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our teachers who have worked so hard to create inclusive learning spaces for our students.

Hawk Talk Highlights
At our Hawk Talk this morning, we discussed the return to school.  Thanks to the parents/caregivers who shared some feedback with me.  Here are a couple of highlights in case you couldn’t make it.  As always, please reach out to me via email or phone if you have any questions or concerns.

  • Cedar Street Crosswalk Light: Over the summer I was made aware that the crosswalk light was hit and broken in a car accident.  I made sure the Wellesley Police Department was aware and they have ordered a new light. I checked in yesterday with Officer Poirier, our School Resource Officer, and she shared that a new light has been ordered and will hopefully be here soon!

  • Monthly Assemblies:  Each month, we are coming together as a school community for assemblies where we teach, practice and reinforce the school-wide, expected behaviors.  Our goal with PBIS is to create a learning environment where all students feel safe, valued and ready to learn.  In September we focused on the expected behaviors during arrival and dismissal and since then, students have been earning stars for their classroom jars to work toward a whole-class reward.  A popular reward is always Pajama Day and it has been awesome to see students arrive at school in their pajamas excited to introduce their stuffies.  Eventually, all of these stars will be combined for a whole-school mystery reward!  I am looking forward to our next assembly in October when we will celebrate all of our hard work and shift our focus to a new location/part of the day.  I am so proud of our STAR students!

Spirit Day Alert!
Speaking of school spirit, get your gear (or the colors blue and yellow) ready for our Schofield Spirit Day on Friday of next week.  This is a fun opportunity for students and staff to come together and show their school pride.  We look forward to filling the halls with school spirit and kicking off the fall season with a strong sense of community and joy.

I will be back at the softball and soccer fields this weekend to watch my kids play and fortunately, the weather looks fantastic!  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend as well.

All the best,
Jordan
