Dear Schofield º£½ÇÖ±²¥,Ìý

Earlier today, the Schofield Orchestra, Beginner Band and Regular Band held their annual winter concert. ÌýIt was sublime! ÌýHuge thanks to Mr. MacLeod (Schofield Orchestra), our very own Mr. Polletto (Schofield Beginner Band), and Mr. Adams (Schofield Regular Band) for their tremendous tutelage over these past months! ÌýAdditionally, the 35 plus students that comprised these various groups have put in tens, if not, hundreds of hours preparing for this concert. ÌýHuge thanks to them (and their supportive families)!ÌýÌý

Note from Peggy Tsatsoulis, Assistant Director of Student Services – Elementary Learning Centers:ÌýÌý

Dear Schofield º£½ÇÖ±²¥,Ìý

I am writing to share an update regarding the current vacancy for our Special Education Team Chair position.

As you know, this role is a crucial part of our Special Education team, providing leadership and coordination to ensure our students receive the support they need. We have conducted two hiring rounds but were unable to identify a candidate who met the qualifications for this important role.

We have now reposted the position and are hopeful that this search will bring a new and robust group of candidates. Our priority is to find the right individual with the skills, experience, and dedication to support our students, families, and staff in the best possible way.

In the meantime, I will continue to fill in for the Team Chair ensuring continuity of support for our Special Education team.Ìý

We appreciate your patience, understanding, and continued partnership as we work to fill this essential role.

Thank you,Ìý

Peggy Tsatsoulis, Assistant Director of Student Services – Elementary Learning Centers. Ìý

WHS Students (and former Schofield Alumni) are sponsoring Toys and Tales for Tomorrow: ÌýVicky Draganov and Molly Goldberg are both 10th graders at Wellesley High School (and former alums of Schofield). They run a club at WHS calledÌýToys and Tales for Tomorrow, and their mission is to support children receiving care at Newton-Wellesley Hospital by donating toys and books and offering their time through community service.

This year, one of their main goals is to organize a toy/book drive—and I shared that the Schofield community would love to partner with them to make it happen.

They will be placing a clearly labeled donation box in the main lobby/vestibule at Schofield school between January 5th and January 20th. ÌýIf you would like and/or are able to, please donate new or gently used toys and books. Ìý

On behalf of Vicky and Molly, thanks for reading/considering! Ìý

Upcoming Events:

  • Monday, January 19 – No school due to the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

  • Thursday, January 22 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the gym – Schofield Math Games Night.

Take care,

Stephen Goodwin, Ed.D.

Dear Schofield º£½ÇÖ±²¥,Ìý

I have been sitting in fairly frequently with the Grade 5 chorus as they prepare for their Winter Solstice concert on Friday, December 19 at 9 a.m. ÌýThe students are working hard and rounding into form. ÌýSpecial thanks to Mr. Polletto, sublime Schofield Music Teacher, for his instructional prowess over the past four months. ÌýAs I have stated in different forms and formats, the Grade 5 Chorus teaching assignment is among the most challenging in public education. ÌýRegarding this assignment, Mr. Polletto excels at a level that I have not been previously privy to. ÌýAdditionally, Ms. Messore, Schofield Building Substitute, consistently supports the entire Grade 5 chorus during their weekly lessons as well. ÌýHuge thanks to her as well! Ìý

I wanted to wish a Happy Hanukkah to those who will be celebrating it starting this coming Sunday. ÌýÌý

Dear Schofield º£½ÇÖ±²¥,Ìý

This past Monday, the district held its annual full day Professional Development Day. ÌýFrom this perspective, it was a massive success. ÌýI attended three separate workshops (from well over 60 plus offerings conducted by over 100 Wellesley teachers/administrators) on that day and each one was phenomenal. ÌýI attended the following three workshops: Ìý“Counting Students In: ÌýRethinking Math, Power and Possibility†(which featured the excellent math documentaryÌýCounted Out); “Elevating Student Voice: ÌýCultivation a Math º£½ÇÖ±²¥ Through Hands Down Conversations†(i.e., structuring math classes where student discourse is a lead element); and “Growing Up: ÌýWhat Our Students Need to Thrive in School†which for inspiration used the novella “Foster†by Claire Keegan, a sublime Irish short story author. ÌýI came away both inspired as well as motivated to learn more about how we can better support our math learning as well as our students’ social-emotional well being! ÌýAgain, many thanks to the district for supporting a day of profound learning! Ìý

Huge thanks to our Kindergarten parents for supplying a bevy of snacks and beverages for our staff room! Wow! ÌýSo kind and very much appreciated! Ìý

Private School Applications FYI: ÌýIt is that time of year again when application deadlines start to approach for those families who are considering private school for next year.Ìý

Most applications are due starting in mid-January straight through February 1. ÌýJanuary can be a busy time for teachers as they prepare progress reports for the last week of January. ÌýWe proactively ask for your help so that the application process can be handled efficiently during December and January.

In an effort to facilitate this process for all:

  • Please provide all application materials to your teacher at least 30 days in advance of the application deadline. To reiterate, this time of year is very busy for staff and they would like the time to give each student’s application the attention it deserves. Ìý

  • Please fill out and return the attached Release of Confidential Information form to Kristin LuekenÌýluekenk@wellesleyps.orgÌýas soon as possible.

  • Many schools use the online application Ravenna (The Premier Admissions and Student Management platform for K-12 Private and Independent Schools) Once an account has been set up on Ravenna and we receive the Release of Confidential Information form, we can upload transcripts on the site.Ìý

Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for helping ensure that the process works smoothly for both the Schofield staff and your family.

Upcoming Events:

  • Friday, December 12 from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m. in the gym – Dr. Goodwin Hawk Talk. Ìý

  • Friday, December 19 at 9 a.m. in the gym – Grade 5 Winter Solstice Concert.

Take care,

Go Hawks

Dear Schofield º£½ÇÖ±²¥,

Hello!  I hope you are all enjoying your respective summers so far!

My name is Stephen Goodwin and I will be the Interim Schofield Principal for the 2025 – 2026 school year.  I started this past Tuesday at Schofield and have begun to listen and learn on all fronts. Many thanks to Kristin, sublime Schofield secretary, and Scott, tremendous Head Custodian, for already answering at least 50 plus questions from me.  As a brief aside, I previously served as the Sprague Principal from 2010 – 2014.  Thus, I am very excited to return to the º£½ÇÖ±²¥ and more specifically work collaboratively with everyone that is part of the Schofield school community.

As I mentioned to some parties at Kindergarten Orientation and for those I bumped into at the Schofield Fun Run (and yes, I recall who passed me on the course!), I would be happy to meet with any of you this summer.  I completely understand that summer schedules are busy.  Having said that, if you would like to meet, just send me an email with a date/time (or two) and I will be sure to make it work on my end.  I’m thinking no more than 15-20 minutes as your summer time is extremely valuable!

Thank you for perusing and please return to your regularly scheduled summer time programming!

Take care,
Stephen

P.S. – Huge kudos to Dan Donahue, superb Schofield Night Custodian, on his pending retirement next week.  Dan has magnificently served the º£½ÇÖ±²¥ for 28 years, 15 of them at Schofield.  Only having worked with Dan for three days, I can tell I missed a great one!  We wish Dan (and his family) the best in retirement!

P.S.S. – Belated congratulations to the incredible Kathy Hood, Schofield Kindergarten Teacher, on her recent retirement.  I had the pleasure of serving with Kathy on the WPS All Day Kindergarten Committee back in 2013 – 2014.  She was a vital member of that committee that led to the formation of all day kindergarten for the district.  More importantly, she shaped the lives of hundreds of Schofield five and six year olds for nearly 30 years.  When I had the pleasure of visiting Schofield in mid June, the love and affection for Kathy was palpable.  She will be missed immensely!  And yes, I have already called her with a few questions (and she kindly didn’t ignore my call)!  Thank you, Kathy, for all your passion and efforts on behalf of your Schofield students, colleagues and families.  We wish you and your family the best in the years to come!  Please visit!

Dear Schofield Families,

This week, our amazing STAR students earned their first school-wide reward of the year.  Through their hard work, positive behavior and dedication to Schofield’s core values, they reached their goal of filling the star jar and got to watch the first part of the movie, Wall-E!   Students continue to earn stars for showing STAR behavior during arrival, dismissal, breakfast as well as in the hallways and at their lockers. They are rocking it and we are all so proud of them.  Go Hawks!

. . . .

. . . .

THANK YOU
Last weekend, several families came to Schofield to participate in a campus clean up.  They trimmed bushes, raked leaves and put down new mulch.  It’s always heartening when students and their families take care of the school they love so much.  Thanks to all of the families who helped!

STEAM Week
Be sure to ask your child about their work on the Panda Puzzle this week.  All students in grades K-5 participated in solving these engaging spatial puzzles that varied in terms of the challenge from kindergarten through fifth grade. I listened in on a class discussion where they were debriefing their work on the Panda Puzzle and students shared about how this activity taught them how important it is to persevere when things get difficult.

Title I
This year, Schofield is participating in the federally-funded Title I Targeted Assistance Program (TAP).  Please see for more information about what this means for Schofield.  As always, please reach out if you have any questions.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-teacher conferences begin next week.  This is a valuable opportunity to connect with your child’s teacher and discuss their progress as well as goals for the school year.  Our partnership is key to our students’ success so be on the lookout for the sign ups and reach out if you cannot find a time that works.

I hope you all have a fantastic fall weekend.

All the best,
Jordan

Dear Schofield Families,

Exciting news! During Thursday morning’s live-streamed announcements to all classrooms, we celebrated a major achievement—we succeeded in filling our school-wide Star Jar! This means that, through our collective efforts in demonstrating positive behavior and our school values, we’ve earned a special reward: a whole-school “short” movie!  We are so proud of our students for working together to reach this goal, and we look forward to enjoying this well-deserved reward together next week.

Another highlight of the week was seeing the fifth graders and kindergartners get together the first time this year for buddies.  There was such amazing energy and excitement for this partnership to begin and I know both the kindergarten students and our fifth grade leaders had a fantastic time getting to know one another!

. . . . .

STEAM Week:
This year, is celebrated from October 21- 25th. In Wellesley we say STEAM to acknowledge the art and creativity involved in STEM. This year, Wellesley elementary schools will focus on the Math in STEAM with our students.  Next week, your child will be exploring and trying to solve a challenging spatial puzzle.

Why a Spatial Puzzle? What’s important about Spatial Reasoning?

  • Spatial reasoning provides multiple entry points and equitable access to mathematics.

  • Spatial reasoning is critical to mathematics and to STEAM more broadly.  Research indicates a strong relationship between spatial reasoning and mathematics achievement across grades.

  • Spatial reasoning is also an important predictor of achievement in STEAM careers.

  • Spatial reasoning is malleable and can be improved at any age.

  • Spatial puzzles are fun and provide productive struggle.

If you are interested in continuing and enriching this type of spatial reasoning for your child at home, there are many commercial activities available. Here is for elementary age children.  Please reach out to Toni Carlson at carlsont@wellesleyps.org if you have any questions about STEAM week.

I am looking forward to wrapping up my week at the Schofield Halloween Dance. Thanks to the many parent volunteers who helped make this event possible.  Can’t wait to see the 5th Grade Crazy Cakes all of the creative costumes!

All the best,
Jordan

Go Hawks

Dear Schofield Families,

We have had an awesome week here at Schofield.  Our entire school gathered on Wednesday for a whole-school assembly where we celebrated students for all of their hard work earning stars for their jars when following expectations for arrival, dismissal and breakfast.  We also introduced a new opportunity to earn stars by exhibiting STAR behavior in the hallways and at lockers.  A highlight of the assembly was when the entire school cheered for the students in KH who had learned all of the words to, “The Schofield School Song.”  Students are extremely excited to find out what the mystery school spirit day will be when we fill the school-wide jar very soon!  Stay tuned!

National Walk to School Day was a huge success with so many families walking, riding or even rolling to school.  Kudos to all!
. . .  .

SEL Groups at Schofield:
Ms. Berenson (social worker) and Ms. Robert (school psychologist) provide vital social, emotional and behavioral support to our students by meeting individually, in small groups and sometimes with entire classes. They also collaborate with teachers and staff to create positive learning environments and implement strategies that foster student well-being and success. Together, they help ensure our school is a safe and supportive space for all students.

Throughout the year, Ms. Berenson and Ms. Robert will be running SEL groups to work on a variety of social skills.  If you do not want your child to participate in a group, please use to opt out by Friday, October 25th.  Feel free to reach out to them directly with any questions: robertr@wellesleyps.org and  berensons@wellesleyps.org.

I want to wish those observing Yom Kippur an easy fast.  Please note that there is no school on Monday in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day so we will see students and staff back at Schofield on Tuesday.  Have a wonderful weekend!

All the best,
Jordan

National Walk to School Day:

Schofield School

Go Hawks

Dear Schofield Families,

As the leaves begin to change with the official start of fall, we are thrilled to see our students settling into their routines, engaging in new learning opportunities, and building friendships. This is such a special time of year as we watch our school community grow and thrive.  I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our teachers who have worked so hard to create inclusive learning spaces for our students.

Hawk Talk Highlights
At our Hawk Talk this morning, we discussed the return to school.  Thanks to the parents/caregivers who shared some feedback with me.  Here are a couple of highlights in case you couldn’t make it.  As always, please reach out to me via email or phone if you have any questions or concerns.

  • Cedar Street Crosswalk Light: Over the summer I was made aware that the crosswalk light was hit and broken in a car accident.  I made sure the Wellesley Police Department was aware and they have ordered a new light. I checked in yesterday with Officer Poirier, our School Resource Officer, and she shared that a new light has been ordered and will hopefully be here soon!

  • Monthly Assemblies:  Each month, we are coming together as a school community for assemblies where we teach, practice and reinforce the school-wide, expected behaviors.  Our goal with PBIS is to create a learning environment where all students feel safe, valued and ready to learn.  In September we focused on the expected behaviors during arrival and dismissal and since then, students have been earning stars for their classroom jars to work toward a whole-class reward.  A popular reward is always Pajama Day and it has been awesome to see students arrive at school in their pajamas excited to introduce their stuffies.  Eventually, all of these stars will be combined for a whole-school mystery reward!  I am looking forward to our next assembly in October when we will celebrate all of our hard work and shift our focus to a new location/part of the day.  I am so proud of our STAR students!

Spirit Day Alert!
Speaking of school spirit, get your gear (or the colors blue and yellow) ready for our Schofield Spirit Day on Friday of next week.  This is a fun opportunity for students and staff to come together and show their school pride.  We look forward to filling the halls with school spirit and kicking off the fall season with a strong sense of community and joy.

I will be back at the softball and soccer fields this weekend to watch my kids play and fortunately, the weather looks fantastic!  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend as well.

All the best,
Jordan
