 Frequently Asked Questions

1) How are members selected?

Members receive an invitation to apply. Once they’ve applied, their application is reviewed by a board of faculty. Please see below for a more comprehensive guide to the membership-selection process.

  1. Invitation to apply.
    • All WHS juniors and seniors who are not already in NHS and have an unweighted, unrounded GPA of 3.7 (i.e., 3.69 is too low) are invited to apply. Eligible students will automatically be sent a letter of invitation. A student who transfers into WHS as a senior (including the summer before senior year) may not apply. A sophomore or junior who transfers in may apply the following school year.
  2. Faculty input.
    • Names of students who submit applications will be sent to the faculty, who will have a chance to provide input to the Faculty Council.
  3. Faculty Council Deliberations.
    • Student applications will be reviewed by members of the Faculty Council, which comprises 5-10 faculty members appointed each year by the Principal. The Council members will evaluate each applicant’s four NHS core values — character, leadership scholarship and service — as demonstrated in the application. Faculty input will also be considered. The final decision will be by majority vote of the Council. Note that although NHS advisors may be present in the Council meetings in order to facilitate discussion, the advisors take no part in the voting.
  4. Student Notification.
    • Students will be notified via school email of the Council’s decision. They will be formally inducted via an in-person ceremony.
  5. Re-applying.
    • Juniors who are denied admission to NHS may re-apply in the Fall of their Senior year and are encouraged to meet with the NHS advisors to discuss ways to improve their application for next year.
  6. Appeal.
    • Students who are denied acceptance into NHS have the right to appeal to the Principal.

Note: All members are required to pay the Wellesley High School Activities Fee each fall.

2) What are the requirements for maintaining membership in NHS?

  1. Maintain the required GPA. As of 2024-2025, this is a 3.7 unweighted.
  2. Complete 20 hours of community service; ie volunteer hours. Please note that you can only obtain 10 hour from one specific source (see below for more information).
  3. Complete 2 NHS events. Some of these include: Ushering at the Induction Ceremony, Blood Drive, Faculty Breakfasts, and Duckathon.

3) What constitutes volunteering?

Volunteering is any unpaid work. Usually, this also includes work that does not count for GPA credit. However, we do make some exceptions. For specific questions, please reach out to nhswellesley@gmail.com or contact one of the officers.
